The Círio de Nazaré is one of the biggest religious events in Brazil, held annually in Belém city in the state of Pará on the second Sunday of October. The procession brings together millions of faithful who accompany the image of Our Lady of Nazareth on a journey of faith and devotion through the streets of the city. The event, which combines tradition, culture and religiosity, includes several celebrations such as the transfer, the river pilgrimage and the land pilgrimage, with the rope, a symbol of the sacrifice of those who promise. Recognized as a Cultural Heritage of Humanity by UNESCO, the Círio represents the deep connection of the people of Pará with their patron saint and with the Amazonian identity.

The painting is a portrait of one of the most striking elements of the Círio de Nazaré: the moment when Our Lady is carried by the faithful who use the long rope to support the carriage. In this procession, which is the best known of the event, people of the most diverse beliefs walk a route of more than 3 km on foot, many of them barefoot.
